Friday Hound Blogging

You know what this country needs to get back on its feet? People who believe in the power of entrepreneurship. People who dream of a better tomorrow, and who aren't afraid to risk everything to make that dream come true. People like Phil Ruffin.

The owner of two closed dog tracks has asked state regulators to delay revoking their licenses while he tries to persuade legislators to give the tracks more slot machine revenue to help make them profitable. "The farther we can move dog racing tracks away from the dog racing business, the more likely they are to make a buck," Ruffin told reporters.

Right. The last thing greyhound racing needs is, well, greyhounds. Not everyone is so forward looking though, and that's where guidance from well informed state legislators committed to the well being of their citizens is needed.

The Rhode Island Senate has passed a bill that would extend greyhound racing at Twin River from 125 days to 200 days. Hooray for progressive legislation! And what will be the increase in benefits that will accrue to the citizens of Rhode Island as a result of this brave action in the senate?

Since March 2008, however, when they first defaulted on their loan payments, Twin River’s owners have been struggling to keep their lenders and contractors at bay while avoiding bankruptcy court and to plug an estimated $30-million hole in their operating budget. On May 5, Twin River announced plans to suspend greyhound racing after running the minimum 125 days of racing required to keep its license. The end date is Aug. 8.

Oh pish tosh. We're sure that 30 million dollar hole can be filled with an extra 75 days of racing no one comes to. We mean, look at the success they're having in New Hampshire.

During these tough economic times when residents of the state are losing their jobs and health care, it only makes sense that New Hampshire release the taxpayers from bailing out failing and unprofitable industries. Unfortunately, the only senators in addition to Bradley to vote yes on the proposal for racetracks to pay the cost of their own regulation and save the state approximately $500,000 were Jack Barnes, Peter Bragdon, Sharon Carson, Ted Gatsas, Harold Janeway, Bob Letourneau and Bob Odell.

Umm...OK, bad example. Let's take a trip out to Arizona.

Few things have dodged the budgetary ax this year, as conservative Republicans milk a rare opportunity to gut the social contract; everything from education to prenatal care has been on the block. But somehow, one local welfare project seems to have avoided this fiscal bloodbath. For nearly 15 years, Tucson Greyhound Park and other Arizona racing facilities have gotten an almost-free tax ride, thanks to the generous citizens of our fair state.
Lawmakers created a tax exemption for simulcast-race wagering, allowed the tracks special deductions for capital improvements and instituted a "hardship tax credit," which often allows them to avoid paying any taxes at all.

There. See what a concerned and committed state legislature can do? We mean, can't we all agree that being an overlord is a "hardship?" Come on, there's the social stigma, the lack of empathy, low self esteem, constant buzzing in your head and poor dental hygiene. If that's not hardship, we don't know what is.

According to the Arizona Department of Racing, in fiscal year 1995—the last year before the subsidies took effect—the state received nearly $9 million in revenues from horse and dog tracks. In 2008, because of the exemptions, that sum shrank to about $430,000. A 2007 review by the Arizona Office of the Auditor General revealed that exemptions and tax credits for the racing industry cost the state $44 million in revenues between 2001 and 2006.

Oh, sure it sounds bad when you say it like that, but what about all those overlords who didn't have to go into the job market? What about all those dogs who were forced to run their hearts out and then die in the desert, huh? What about them? We say 44 million is a small price to pay for that kind of return, right Monty?

Poker Run, AKA Monty warmed the foster family’s heart the minute he came into the house. He will come up for affection; he likes to get right up into your lap. He’s a really sweet boy. Monty would do well in a working family home, with well-mannered teenagers. He would do well with other dogs of any size, but it’s not necessary. For more information about this dog, and other rescued racing greyhounds looking for homes, go here. If you don't know about the plight of racing greyhounds go here.

Editor's Note: I'd like to thank those who sent a kind words after last week's Friday Hound Blogging. I haven't been able to bring myself to revisit that post since I wrote it, so I may not have seen them all, but I appreciate you taking the time to send some sympathy our way. Rollie roamed the marbled halls of IM Central for 14 of his 15 years, so he's left a pretty big hole in our lives, and our hearts. You get through by remembering the good times, though, don't you?

Amen. Eventually, you start smiling more than crying too. They're gifts that keep giving even after they leave us.

OK, Lonely Hearts Club Band, let's start kicking ass!
Ironicus Maximus, look at Michael Mooney's article in Miami New Times. He adopted Jailamony and man, that got a story going!
While you are at it, find everything you can about a Martin Roper, North Carolina. Let's do a John Parker on that big boy. He is always in everybody's face and we'd like to know, why? They are probably every Greyhound's nightmare .
Let's do Rollie one last roll. He and millions like him are rooing for it; dead, dying and barely alive.
Show no mercy. Let them know you learned that.

Anonymous said...

Hello IM...I agree with Anonymous. Like Ivana Trump says: "Don't get mad; get even!" .
It's hard to equate the life of a Greyhound to a lot of cash, but when we know that's precisely the ambition of Racetracks, let's hit all the losers with a "DNF".
The more we gut the big guys, those tracks will fold and the only way to do it is exposing the cruelty and blatant brutality.
Lets put these thugs on the racks and show who they truly are. And whether or not they say hello or heaven-o, the game is definitely up.

Anonymous said...

If you are going to investigate Martin Roper, let's look into Ken Strawbridge, too. All these local, yocals sobbing the blues because of supposed unemployment and ruining the dogs' "fun", is just too much to stomach.
I'd also like to know what politicians and various senators get keeping a lid on racetracks' dirty secrets. What is in it for them? Let's find out! And cannot they, as well, be charged for helping to hide the facts?
Finally, why isn't the SPCA allowed to walk right through kennels after someone takes photos or complains of negligence and obvious cruelty?
The courts are not doing their jobs and either are the lawyers.
With dogs and people , together, everywhere, including hospitals and jails, everyone knows racetrack life is a life condemned. Only those not loving dogs would put them through this torture. Let's hold them accountable and in print.

Michelle Young Cuenant said...

I hope you will adopt another ,soon. Your Greyhounds obviously thrive in your environment.
Good Luck!

In the meantime, I too, enjoyed the article from Michael Mooney's Miami New Times . How great is that when writers all get together and call a spade a spade. Read it. You could add a bundle to it, I'm sure!
Rollie is laughing everytime you hit the keys.

Michelle Young Cuenant said...

By the way...let's speak of those fabulous , committed, volunteers who truly make our day in the Greyhound World.
The most exceptional people I have come across are so many, but to name just a few, let's do it.

SUSAN NETBOY
JUDY PAULSEN
DR. DODDS
CHRISTINE DORCHAK
PAT GETZ
KARYN ZOLDAN
MICHAEL MOONEY
and of course...
IRONICUS MAXIMUS

In the name of all "Rollies"...let's go after the bad guys.
Summer is here and the heat is a killer, literally. How many more will needlessly die racing for tracks where no-one is attending? This is true animal cruelty at its intentional worst. Let us , finally, end it all. In the name of Greyhound.

Ironicus said...

Whoa. That's some list for us to be on. Usually the lists we make are...um...er...ah...well look, we know Susan Netboy and we're honored just to be on the same continent as she. We also know Ken Strawbridge.

Dude's a toilet stain.

On a good day.

But as long as we're doing a list thing, we'd like to add Melani Nardone and Lenka Perron who has been a little quiet lately due to having kids and such, but who is one of the most committed and caring persons we have ever met while sober.

Well, even while not sober, although we don't really remember a lot of those people.

See why we get on the lists we do?

Anonymous said...

The nicest people I ever meet are over cognac or wine. Sober is wise. Not sober, wiser, depending on who you're with.

Martin Roper said...

Investigate me?! For what? For disagreeing? Investigate away, "Anonymous." At least I have the stones to post my real name with each and every thing I write.

Ironicus Maximus said...

Hey look everybody, overlord Roper has joined us!

And he wants to be investigated because dude has stones, man.

Signs everything he writes, including his shopping list.

Plus he can spell broccoli in less than four tries.

I'll bet all of you people have NEVER step foot on a farm or a racing kennel. I'll also put money on it that none of you personally know anyone from the "dog business". Until you get your facts straight STFU. All you people know how to do is run your mouth about others b/c your lives are so very boring and you're miserable. I am infact a dog owner and I plan on keeping all of my racers. I only own a few but they have a nice home to come to when they are done. Instead of talking all of your garbage why don't you walk in our shoes for about a week. We love what we do. The dog business isn't what it used to be. Our dogs almost eat and sleep better than I do! I've got TONS of pictures of our dogs in our kennel sleeping upside down or some smiling so big that they are all teeth! If they are sooo abused then why do they sing in the kennel with us? Or smile when open their crate to talk to them?? Answer me these questions with an INTELLIGENT answer and you might convince me you are right. I doubt you can do that b/c all you people do is talk trash with NO FACTS what so ever!!! As for Martin Roper, ha ha he's a very nice and VERY SMART man. He knows 10 times more about the greys than you people will ever know. BTW, about the tracks closing....what do you think happens to all of those dogs??? Some go to other tracks and some go back home for breeding. Others go to adoption groups. There are only so many adoption groups out there. So, what happens to the dogs that are left b/c you people bitched pissed moaned and groaned about the tracks closing and now it's closed with dogs left?? They get put down b/c there is no where for them to go. I don't see any of the "AR's" volunteering their time nor their money to help with adoption when the tracks close. These poor non profit adoption groups take as many as they can and spend money out of their pockets to help the dogs. All I've got to say is I'm a PROUD member of the NGA and I love all of my greyhounds and I also love my job of working in a racing kennel! Those dogs make me happy and have helped me through hard times on a personal level. I wouldn't trade anything in the world for what I do everyday! So get your facts straight and then start your bickering. Come to the tracks. I'll even tell you which one I'm at and invite you to see my "poor abused" greyhounds. lmao You people are a joke. HA HA HA HA HA HA HA

Ironicus Maximus said...

Oh look, it's overlord "Anonymous" who can type many words.

Also, ALL CAPS!!

But no "stones" Eh overlord Roper?

Martin Roper said...

Fred,

I don't work in a racing kennel nor did I post here to argue with you. I was just surprised that any "investigation" of me was required. I post everywhere as either Martin Roper or mroper, except one pet site that I joined many years ago that has my Yahoo screen name. Investigations are usually reserved for those who have done wrong. Unless there is something wrong with raising money for adoption, maintaining the database at Greyhound-data.com, or educating people about Greyhounds, then an investigation is completely unnecessary. I'm easily accessible by e-mail through Greyhound-data, and by PM on a number of Greyhound-related boards. I even have a Greyhound history and pedigree site right here on Blogger.com, the Roper Report. I'm a NGA member and my phone number is on file. If anyone wants to call me, feel free to do so, but don't waste time "investigating" me---I'll be more than happy if you or your readers contacted me directly.

Martin

I see you didn't volunteer nor did you say anything about experiencing the "dog business" for yourself. Again, just another person to run their mouth. Again, about the "poor caged animals"....please feel free to let me know if you'd like to come to our kennel and see our "poor caged animals". Unless you're afraid you might actually be wrong. (Which you are btw). :-)

Hey. We looked through all the NGA listings and we can't find "Anonymous" Kennels anyplace.

We even looked under some other names we thought were appropriate, like No "Stones" Greyhound Racing.

Nada.

Maybe "Anonymous" is John Parker. : )
John, although loving pix with wife and oodles of greyhounds with barns, etc, does not like people to follow too close to the border...particularly when that nasty scene of thousands of dumped and dead greyhounds were uncovered.(Did we hear from John about that?) Dear me. Things are getting shakier by the minute for racetracks, , you guys. Christine Dorchak rules!!!!!!!!!!!!
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Boy! "The Roper Report"? Is that like "NBC"? And if so, is it a completely unbiased "report"? If not, another Advil, please. (One more supercilious ass.)

Martin Roper said...

Wow. Namecalling and cynicism seems to be rampant here. Are you all in the habit of doing that to people you don't even know? Why not just read the blog before criticizing it? It's pretty informative with articles on the history of the breed, not necessarily about racing. I would think that might have some interest to anyone who loves Greyhounds. Today's article is interesting, I think. If you have the slightest interest in the pedigree of your dog, there is information on that there too. If you have any questions, you can e-mail me through Greyhound-data.

Dear Mr. Roper:
It has been brought to my attention that you are indeed the same Mr. Roper who wrote that Mr. Mooney's artice was "biased" in your letter to the Editor regarding Jailamony in the New Times, Miami. May I ask, biased in what way?
His job, like all reporters' jobs, is to inform of the facts, without opinions, without useless commentary, and certainly in vivid color.
When he opened with the race of the death of a Greyhound, there is the business at the heart of it. It is dangerous for the dog, and intentionally. No dog runs in circles at 45 miles an hour, unless forced. That is abuse. Add the fact that there are eight of them at 45 miles an hour racing and rolling and an electrical lure, to add to all the danger, well, once again, that's exactly what was reported; the death of a Greyhound that you raise for this "sport".
We don't raise Cockers, Yorkshires, Poodles, etc....cage them, feed them bad meat , often tainted, and then shoot them if they don't win or they get too old to keep, business wise. You see, pet keepers are not in the act of business; they are in the act of pet-keeping, for better or for worse. And this is until they die, naturally.
Yes, there is a difference when Greyhounds get killed by cars and when Greyhounds get killed by racetracks. All too often, adopters have tried to give them a home, and forever. Racetracks are never in the business of home-finding as that's why there are so many "pups without partners"; and probably milions of them, worldwide.
Personally, I would not take much pride in a business where very few reap millions at a loving animal's expense while most of the workers shovelling the poo and the vomit and the dirty bedmats get paid minimum wages. The workers might take it out on the dogs but even worse, might even maim them. And then, where does that leave the Greyhound?
No Mr. Roper, all too often we have seen you with your rantings and your ravings and your very poor judgements when it comes to the understanding of the simple needs of man's best friend. Thousands have read jailamony and with Ironicus Maximus and all the listed volunteers and hundreds more, we shall put this most horrible , backward "sport" "to rest".
It would be highly advised to leave this business with your head semi-high.

Martin Roper said...

Do any of you have names? It would certainly be easier to carry on a substantive conversation if I knew who you were.

Since you brought up the Jailamony article, let me ask a few simple questions; is lure-coursing OK? How about amateur racing like NOTRA or LGRA? Are they OK? If not, I can see your point. Running at high speed certainly can be dangerous. There was a post on GreyTalk a while back of a dog at lure coursing that dropped dead after its run, apparently of a heart attack. I've been to a number of lure coursing meetings and a dog was injured, in varying severity, at every one. One broke a leg.

If you're OK with lure coursing and amateur racing, it seems hypocritical to be against track racing. The running surface at a lure coursing meet is infinitely variable, nothing like the groomed surface of a real track. NOTRA and LGRA events are often held on unprepared surfaces. Injuries can and do occur.

If they're not OK, what is the prospect for the breed? The AKC Greyhound is hideously inbred and most of them can't run an errand. If one cannot race or course Greyhounds, how does one choose the best examples to carry the breed forward? Whim? A breed "standard"? (Nothing more than a whim set down on paper.) Do any of you have any experience breeding and raising working dogs? Have you given any thought for the future of the breed without a means of choosing the best breeding examples without actually seeing them perform? Lots of questions, I know, but they're important ones for the survival of the breed.

Anyway, this is a poor forum for this debate. Perhaps you'd like to join Greyhoundsmakegreatpets.com. It has a debate forum that is very loosely moderated. You can make your points there and even call me names if you like.

Did anyone read my blog? I hope no one was so closed-minded that they wouldn't reead it just because of who wrote it.

I'm done here. Have a nice day.

Ironicus,

How would you enjoy it if a blog took personal jabs at you, using your real name? Productive discussion is one thing, grade school antics are quite another. You have your right to your views on the racing industry but that you continue to express them in such a childish vein makes the points you try to express akin to yellow journalism. These antics work better for rejected writers, unfunny comics and lame reality shows. You do appear to love your greyhounds. Fully focusing your Friday blogs on promoting your group's adoptables would be far more helpful to getting these dogs into homes in addition to promoting greyhound adoption in general.

The saddest thing in life is to take advantage , incessantly, of "vulnerables" be it chid, grandparent, or animal, not to mention the handicapped.
When an animal such as the Greyhound, is not only "vulnerable" due to its speed, past history of lucrative events, and finally it's absolute submission due to loyalty and sweetness, this is the height of taking advantage, period. On top of all that, the dog, due to it's training, will re-break the bones it already sacrificed as a matter of habitual taunting of lures. And how many pet owners can you find that want to home and care for these "cripples" because of dental problems, bone fractures, or sheer fright.
No. The tracks owe these dogs their lives, at minimum. Greyhounds have paid for human fools far too long.

Ironicus Maximus said...

Ha ha ha ha ha ha! The overlords are telling us to grow up?

That's pretty funny.

Let's go to last week's Friday Hound Blogging and ask good citizen Susan McDowell what happens when you get all adult up in the overlords' grills.

She wrote and genuinely adult letter (using her own name) opining that it was fiscally unsound for the state to continue carrying overlord losers.

And what did she get? Well, she was called a liar several different ways, told greyhound racing was none of her business and she should concern herself with flies instead, and had one overlord act like she didn't even know the state had a legislature, just so Ms. McDowell's point could be berated.

Yeah. Treating the overlords like adults and trying to engage them in serious debate is so productive.

Anonymous said...

"Overlords" wtf is that?! lmao another childish antic??? Get new material. Greyhounds were born and bred to run. B/c of one bad person that did in fact abuse the dogs (back in the day) EVERYONE in the greyhound industry is bad. BTW they don't go 45mph around the track. They can only do that on a straight track. I don't think they have those. lol Those dogs love to run. If you've ever been to a track you would see that they love it. Some do some don't. If they don't fine. Put them on a nice couch. I'm not for putting them down but as it stands with the NGA greyhounds aren't "shot". Whoever thinks that is a complete moron. Why don't some of you people that keep repeating yourselves visit a track and go to the kennels and see it for yourselves instead spouting off things you've NEVER experienced for yourself?! Or are you people afraid to be wrong?? I think it's you're afraid. It's okay to be afraid for the record. Try something new for a change instead of bad mouthing others. You might like it!

Anonymous said...

This is exactly the kind of post I like. Why? Because there are and have been millions to tell you otherwise. And why again? Because they HAVE BEEN to tracks, like Michael Mooney, like even some track owners who DO want to abolish it as it ISN'T making money, and it's time HAS come to an end. Like slavery, only the top slave owners thrived. Everyone else went to hell. And particularly the slaves, may I add!
As for myself , you can check MY name, anytime, on Google. I have , since seeing Animal Planet more than a year ago about Dr. Dodds' clinic for "retired racers" in California, have spoken out plenty. Her blood bank which has saved millions of GREYHOUNDS, that probably were either dumped or homeless or both has been a lifeline for thousands of dogs either directly or indirectly.Through that initial broadcast, I HAVE visited several kennels, one refusing to open to me, may I add, even after I made an "appointment". (It was racetrack -related, obviously ,as it cared little for the adoption to be made. ) All hum and no whistle. But they are going to blow their own horns at the Greyhounds' expense, of course!
In the meantime, most of us do sign our names but others have been harassed such as on several Greyhound Lists who claim to be "neutral". Such perpetual rubbish from the racetrack agenda people as it is seriously flawed to assume people believe you. And that is precisely why tracks are closing. They have proof of the abuses and they have proof of the injuries and they have proof the populations WANT them shut down.
My name? No thanks. Not this time, pal. My emails are for friendships, true and blue, and for those who respect the Planet and all things equal. The Greyhound's persecution must finally be stopped. We are all here to do precisely that!
"Get a life" some of you say? My dears. We are all trying to do that, a million-fold.

PS.. Roper suggests to look at his website? Tell you what ...you look at GREY2 K's and watch all the videos of the deaths of these Greyhounds and get BACK to Ironicus Maximus and "feel it". This I got to see! We are all waiting.

Emily Taylor :-) said...

hhmm....Good and bad in everything. My name is Emily Taylor. I work at Southland in West Memphis. I'm not afraid of "AR's" as to me they are uneducated about the racing industry. You view videos and haven't been to tracks. Come find me at Southland. We don't have "sick, under fed, mistreated, unhappy," etc greyhounds in our kennel. I'm also a member of the NGA. I own 12 of my own and if they don't make it fine. They have a nice home to come to when they are done. We've never put any dog down b/c it couldn't run. Like I said, there's good and bad in every industry. The dog business isn't the only one out there. Oh I also have pictures of my "mistreated" greys too. :-)

Anonymous said...

Emily, it is nice to see a name out there. You own 12! How many people in the NGA own "12"? Is it because of over-breeding and the fact that there are so many of them? And what happens to the others that you do not own? (And can everybody afford "12"?)
How many have you seen "put to sleep" because they can't run, can't entertain, and cannot look "good"?
How many puppies do you know of that have been drowned, for whatever reason, as there are so many?
Like Jailamony, how many "losers" do you know that were labelled "DNF"?
DID NOT FINISH means a million things.
What they don't like to put over the speaker is the cry of the dog. The frenzy of the Greyhounds. And the fact that "DNF" is just another term for DEAD; a NUISANCE; and FORGOTTEN.
Ah yes. Jailamony. What a name! There is reason why Michael Mooney kept it. It represents all the "DNF"'s out there that have been forced into labor and caged. And for what? So that a few dozen can look good on a lead by the barns and you can pretend to be some master or mistress of years gone past? Truth be told, a dog is a dog not a trophy. All true dog owners and lovers know that.
"DNF" has happened to millions of dogs, handicapped, maimed, or killed. Why don't you guys speak english when it comes to the pain and suffering of this breed. It is called:
ELECTROCUTION
BROKEN SPINES
BROKEN NECKS
BROKEN LEGS
BROKEN ANKLES
BROKEN RIBS
AND WHATEVER ELSE CAN BE BROKEN, GETS BROKE!
HEART ATTACKS
FROM EXCESS HEAT
FROM ABUNDANT DRUGS (COCAINE INCLUDED)
FROM OVERLY STRESSED
AND THE LISTS GO ON AND ON!
Emily, you may or may not be a dog lover. I will never really know. The fact that you belong to the NGA means to me that you , of all people, should be putting your money into saving and protecting the Greyhound, not using it to death or misrepresenting the horrendous life these dogs must go through in order for so few to make it on your 12 leash iron hand.

Michelle Young Cuenant said...

Hello Emily! Good and bad in everything? We'd like to know, since you do know and are close to this "industry", what do you see as the "bad" n Greyhound Racing? Pretend you do not belong to the NGA and tell it like you would see it, from the eyes of the Greyhound, who just might be unhappy with "some" conditions.
This would help the dog.
Thank you.

Emily said...

You all think the dogs are mistreated b/c of what happened 30 or 40 years ago. They aren't treated like that at all! From the old timers I've talked it's a very rare occasion that a dog will break a neck, spine, ribs, and ankles. Since I've been at Southland I've never seen any of the named above. You know if I didn't care about the dogs I wouldn't have spent my own money to fix a dog's dislocated hock (with out asking the owner first), or take a dog to the vet b/c he got sick and pay for it out of my own pocket, and also carry one little girl to the vet b/c she got pnuemonia. The one that dislocated her hock and the other dog that got sick are now at my home. I didn't fix her leg b/c I wanted to rehab her and bring her back to the track. The two I have at home go absolutely bonkers when they run around my shed, do donuts around each other, and just act crazy! I would never tell them "No, you can't do that...that's not what you are supposed to do". You are basically telling a grey that they can't play. The pups we get in run around the turn out pen and act a fool! It's funny to watch them. To me, if they are wagging their tail, singing, smiling, etc then they are happy. Greys aren't stupid. If they aren't happy you can tell. Like I said....you are more than welcome to come see my "mistreated" dogs. The only dogs you'll find in my kennel are the ones cockroaching, smiling, wagging their tail, barking for attention, etc. I even give them cupcakes on their birthdays. I've also given them special stuff on Christmas, Thanksgiving, and just whenever I want. Marshmallows are a favorite in our kennel I must say. You asked me what the bad part is....my opinion there are a few people out there that breed too many. Someone has even told me they have too many. BUT, that doesn't mean they are NOT well taken care of. What about all the yorkies, cockers, and poodles that are raised on puppy mills?? Now, THOSE are the dogs that need help! What about the pitbull?? This poor guy gets blamed for everything. What about race horses? They have a jockey on their back. Greys do not have anything making them run. Let me tell you about my first pup. He wins a schooling race and runs 4th in the next. We put him on for official races. He's run 2 7ths, and 2 8ths. You know what's going to happen when grades off?? He's coming home. He won't be "shot", he won't be killed and thrown in a dumpster, he gave it his best shot okay fine. I don't care if they can run or not. I'm divorced and my exhusband was actually jelous of the fact I spent more time at the kennel than I did at home. It doesn't matter if the dogs belong to me or not I still view them as my kids. You guys believe what you want. I was just speaking up for some of the dog people who I know love their dogs and would do anything for them.

Cindy said...

My name is Cindy; I do both sides of the greyhounds~ work on the farm, kennel and then do the adoptions. I am not sure where you people get your information.... It really bothers me that you do not have all the facts. I really think you should get educated by going to the farms then to the kennels.
You may learn that the hounds racing are taken care better than the ones that are on a couch. Most of these hounds live better than we do!!
What about the people that get puppies and decide that they are too much to take care of and give them to HS. Look how crowded they are. Do you ever look into how many of those animals are put down??? I can tell you there is more of that than in the US greyhound world. Or the ones they just let go and have to make it on their own….
Do they get hurt? Sure, they are an athlete. Do you hurt after working out? I think someone said there is good and bad in everything,, VERY TRUE~! I really think you should know everything and have done it before you bad mouth. I have 5 hounds in my house that live with me.
All of the owners and breeders of the greyhounds that I know will even pay for the hounds to get fixed and get them to the place they are going. I have been contacted by some trainers and owners now in FL to help them with the hounds that they have. If you were 100% for the greyhounds you would know they love to run, that is what they have done for hundreds of years...
Do you also know that they are the only dog breed mentioned in the Bible?? Again, is all about the education that you do not have!!!
As far as you saying the broken necks, ribs,,,,, I can tell you being on both sides that most of those injuries happen when they get in homes by getting hit by cars or sliding glass doors. Again, they are treated better in the kennel then they are in most of our homes...

Cindy, I notice both you and Roper talk about the Bible. Even Emily talks about " too gay" on her website. What is it about you people that you even try to justify this obvious Greyhound abuse with "the Bible. it is preposterous! It's like Bush and Rumsfeld justifying killing with "the Bible"! Hello? Newsflash! God does not, nor does He want "His people" killing, maiming, torturing, executing in the name of entertainment, for anything! (oil, money, corruption included.)
Greyhound Racing is going out of business and there has been fair warning. Even Obama is trying to get women back to school so they don't have petty and poor - paying jobs. He is for people and animals alike.
So, better tell that to the Senators and Politicians padding their pockets for a buck off the Greyhounds' backs and helping to reinforce the backwardness of America.
Read. Educate. And YOU perform. It's the 21st Century!

Careful Emily...those who ask for your input in such a manner may well be looking to twist your words. "An NGA insider said...."

Is this comment from Roper, (intimidating like so many others) smoothing over all that ugly stuff that goes on in the Greyhound "Industry", trying to focus " the loyal, and poverty-stricken " to continue to put a "good face" on it. And by the way, as you all mention, at your expense!(divorced or not)
You, whoever this comment is from, is a despicable, cowardly, Greyhound abuser so, old Republican boy, count your cash and be gone! You seem to have used every man and woman for your benefit. (and keep them reading the Bible.) That's called " the faithful flock".

You people are hopeless. Don't you stupid uneducated people realize...YOU ARE WRONG?! lol You have no idea how stupid you sound! I'm laughing histerically at these people making judgements on the dog folks. You people watch videos from other countries on G2K and think that is what goes on in the states. You've lost your damn mind if you think that's how they are treated. I've been reading and not one person has volunteered to actually go to a track to visit with the kennel people. NO ONE! You know why?? Because you are scared to death you might be wrong. That's all it is. Instead of listening to hear say and watching videos that weren't even filmed in the states go see for youselves. Yes, it is the 21st century. Get a clue and read the Bible greyhounds are there! Moron....

Well , between "histerically" and "jelous", what more can be said?

Emily, you may mean well.
"Anonymous", you obviously do not.

As was stated in the very beginning of these comments, ths is about "JAILAMONY". GREY2K has put up videos of the subsequent deaths of Sanford Racetrack, West Palm, and the list goes on. "Other countries" you say? "Please , Jesus, Mary and Joseph; get them to read."

So too with Greyhound Racing.

My name is Birthday Toy and I have a friend called Jawa Spock.
We have been infinitely remembered by those who truly care. (video)
We were "put out of our misery" by Sanford Racetrack and Palm Beach after one more "DNF". We never had a home but where we are , there is, at long last, no more pain.
Of course, real kudos go to Christine Dorchak and Grey2K. They have brought our names to surface climbing above the politicians, senators and "Cindy"s" who try to hide their games.
Many, many hugs to those finally securing all the Arizona , 500 Greyhound tragic injuries in 2008 from two Arizona racetracks. It took a lot of work and devotion, but those that cared did it.
We, the dead and ailing hail JAILAMONY and MICHAEL MOONEY for telling our stories, every day, for more than one hundred years.
These are the names that should be always remembered. And hence, on your lips: Nevermore.

"DICTIONARY FOR LOSERS"

(people and Greyhounds alike)

FOR JAILAMONY

AN "OOPSIE" IS A TOOTSIE LOST.
AN "OUCHIE" IS A BONE THAT'S TOSSED.
A" BOOGER" IS AN EYE DISPLACED.
A "PISS-OFF" IS A DOG DISGRACED.

ASK DAYTONA WHO WERE YANKED.
BECAUSE THEY HAD TO WALK THE PLANK.
A MILLION LOSERS ALL IN CASTS.
"THEY'RE ATHLETES!" SHOUT THE STUPID MASS.

BUT ATHLETES DON'T SLEEP IN A BOX.
OR DIE IN VANS CAUSE IT'S TOO HOT.
HAVE "NEVER HOMES" AND BEG FOR LOVE.
AND HOPE TO GOD ADOPTERS COME.

THE FACT OF LIFE MOST DIE AS "WASTE".
CAUSE RACETRACKS ALL GAVE THEM THEIR FATE.
THEY COCKROACH , TWIRL AND HOWL IN HEAT.
AND THEIR REWARD IS TAINTED MEAT.

THE LYING, THIEVING BUMS OF TRADE,
THESE TAX-EVADING BIRDS OF PREY,
CHEW THEIR FAT AND DUMP THE REST,
THE BEGGER WORKERS "GET IT " LAST.

"GOD WORKS WONDERS!" "GOD PROVIDES!"
"IT'S IN THE BIBLE!" (TAKE A RIDE.)
AND ALL THE "GOOD" BELIEVERS BOW,
OZ HAS SPOKEN. KNEEL OR POW!

A DNF; A CLUB A GUN;
IT MATTERS NOT. THIS DOG IS DONE.
HOW EASY OOPSIES, OUCHIES SEEM.
IT DOESN'T HURT WHEN YOU'RE UNCLEAN.

SO WHEN YOU READ THE SILLY FOLK,
WHO CHANGE THE SUBJECT, GET PROVOKED.
IT'S ALL THEIR GUILT FROM ALL THAT BLOOD.
AND GREYHOUNDS, STANDING HALF IN CRUD.

DOGS THAT COWER. DOGS THAT FREEZE.
DOGS DISABLED. DOGS DISEASED.
AND NO VET COMES CAUSE MONEY'S TIGHT.
IT ALL GOES TO "BIG BUSINESS". RIGHT?

THE MORAL OF THIS STORY IS,
GOD CONDEMNS ALL DIRTY BIZ.
HE WHO TURNS HIS BACK ON TRUTH,
GOES TO HELL. YOU'RE SATAN'S LOOT.

dedicated to ....................
all the oopsies,
ouchies, boogers, and piss-offs, not to mention the DNF's (and whatever else they have secret codes for appealing to the underderground)

More animals die in animal shelters everyday more so than greyhounds. You want to help?? Help the ones that actually NEED IT! If you don't speak up for something that actually needs the help then you people are just too asinine!

Who's the retard who made the poem?? Nice....you're officially going to hell for passing judgement on others. Get a job and stop with the BS. Learn racing terminology before you make up your stupid poems because you sound like an idiot.

Anonymous said...

"Saves Animals"? Excuse me? What is the "difference"?Well, there are wars and there are wars, for one big thing! All wars are started by people! You can stop a war from happening, and that's exactly what people on some Greyhound Rescues and the Greyhound Protection League are trying to do! We don't want to find them in desserts and in Guam tossed to the jungles or in Alabama in pits like the Jews!. Supposedly, "saves animals" wants to do the same?
Tell me what you have done, big boy.
The majority of people with a conscience have helped all animals in all walks of life....why would we avoid the Greyhound? They are worthy of saving too, no? Why on earth would a guy with "saves animals", actually object to anyone trying to save one Greyhound, let alone millions?
Something smells of 4-d meat, to me.

Oh my. We have a "sore loser".
I'll do a poem about that, next time. :)

hhmm Last time I checked I wasn't "fat" nor "big" at all. I weigh 110. So, might want to fix your own insecurities before you insult.

Anonymous said...

It's no wonder "big daddy" isn't in the vocabulary anymore in the "dog business".
However, I do notice the word, and constantly, of "retard".

Anonymous said...

Funny, until now I've never heard the term "big daddy" used in the "dog business" at all. Might want to check with your sources and see where they are getting their information. Looks like the don't know their head from a hole in the ground.

Anonymous said...

Wow. The insensitivity Greyhound Racing is rampant! It's not enough to cage a Greyhound for 18 hours or more a day and say they "like it". You also make fun of the mentally retarded. (intellectually challenged" for those that can read.
To ridicule life is incredibly cruel. One more point for Jailamony.
(I suppose you people think that name is "funny", too.)

Anonymous said...

Don't use big words you might hurt yourself. Seeing as how you are keeping score for an animal....wierd. By the way, I was wondering if the dog you speak of was put down?? "Jailamony" I saw it on Greyhound-Data and she looks fine. Oh, and one more thing....no one is making fun of the "mentally challenged" as you said before. Learn to read before you accuse.

Anonymous said...

"Learn to read, before you accuse"....
The article was about Jailamony. It explicitly states that Jailamony was a" DNF".
You are the one with this lingo. Not real rescues.
"Did Not Finish" is your kind of word filing, correct?
Michael Mooney has the dog now as a pet. He takes care of it with a home and good food and companionship.
As you say, "Learn to read, before you accuse."

We are onto another Friday. Friday Hound Blogging updates the continuous fall of the racing industry.
I hope you can read that.
You are on your way out.

Anonymous said...

You know absolutely nothing of what the dogs go through in the racing world. You read one story and that's what happens to all greyhounds?! That is where you are wrong. So, get over it face facts, greyhound racing is staying. You know why?? Your beloved leader is lying to the public to get votes. That's why g2k is under fire because the votes were bought basically. Read the news you illiterate being. You might learn a thing or two.

Anonymous said...

Oh, and I also looked up her lines and for those of you who read the sad story she did not have a DNF on any 8 pages of her lines. So, keep listening to everything you hear. That's really smart.

This is the sad fact of people connected to the racing "regime". They refuse the FACTS.
New Times, Miami, Jailamony..at the end of page 6 of Michael Mooney's JAILAMONY, I believe it was his 35th race where he was bumped, or collided, whatever, he went to Flagler and it was THERE they labelled him DNF.

Now, THERE are the facts from YOUR races.
We want, since you are all so easily putting up roadblocks to the true testaments of the dogs in peril, access to ALL your injured. Hand them over if you are not embarassed, afraid or feeling guilty.
Christine Dorchak finally got access to TWO Arizona racetracks.
You are NEXT!

Parlay1 said...

Very simple. Visit a Kennel, or Farm and see for yourself. Enough of this looking at a video of a tragic but very rare occurance, or pictures of unknown location or time. Just go for yourselves folks! Stop with the "lemmings" aproach.

Anonymous said...

Parlay1 may be a golfer, or into French, but what is certain is that we always get a chuckle whenever Christine Dorchak's name is raised. It always causes a meltdown.
So many people in the Miami area enjoyed Michael Mooney's story of the Greyhound with the DNF. For me, I had never even heard of that term or would never even think of saying something that removed from a living, breathing dog that got seriously injured enough to be cancelled.
A dog being "cancelled"! Imagine that!
In any case, it's been a huge eye-opener to Floridians and all the tracks that thought we could not even be bothered to read it. We read it, and over and over, on all the blogs.

Parlay1 said...

A dog being cancelled? What are you talking about? DNF simply means Did Not Finish. Seriously people, JUST LOOK FOR YOURSELVES.

Anonymous said...

Of course it did not finish. That is why Michael Mooney eventually ended up with the dog! (The racetrack did not want him anymore.) The dog was no longer a winner. The dog's youth was gone. And so, as most, was his appeal.
We're talking unwanted Greyhounds. (Not letters and cold facts.)
By the way, you're from Texas? I have heard of this game.

Parlay1 said...

The Racetrack does not want or unwant any greyhound, the kennels own or lease the dogs. If the Greyhound was hurt then just like any athlete he would retire with a career ending injury. Like most injuries at the track, this Greyhound was given treatment and will live a normal life. Do not take my word for it or the ones trying to convince you that its a house of horrors at the track. Simple folks......LOOK FOR YOURSELVES!

Anonymous said...

Parlay1

Look at Emily Taylor's website. She , herself , is paying for all the vet bills that were dumped on her by the racetracks.
She is not alone.
With all the 4-D meat that has been habitually fed to these racers ,(and Michael Mooney witnessed that) it's no wonder there are so many adopters with cancerous canines.
That along with the grinding of teeth behind bars all day and night long in their cages, causes these Greyhounds to not be able to chew their food and due to that, do not get the nutrients they need.
They also self-mutilate by rubbing and biting themselves from anxiety and isolation in these racetrack kennels.
The barking and whining and constant noise is enough to drive any animal insane.
You'd do that to a child?
Well if not, don't do it to the Greyhounds you profess to love and respect.
You can read the Humane Society and how they object to Greyhound Racing.

You look that up.

Parlay1 said...

Humane Society of the US(aka HSUS) is another Anti Racing group along the lines of Grey2k and have nothing to do with our local Humane societies. They spread all these "wives tales" just the same(research how many brands of common dogfood contain 4d meat). Look, if you think it is the truth then please encourage the people to go visit these kennels and farms for themselves! I think we both know why you are against that idea. I have contributed enough, you can have the floor. But do enlighten yourself and check out a kennel or farm for yourself.

Anonymous said...

With all due "respect", you have merely "contributed" to the abuse of Greyhounds.

"Climbing out of bed 365" would not have to happen if you didn't employ uneducated , underpaid people to keep caged, stressed-out dogs! (all for your benefit of making ridiculous comments and getting your name in print!)
You, the people that keep these dogs locked up and frenzied ,deserve more than a kick in the pants. You deserve to be in crapped-up stalls at 90 degree heat and be thrown diseased, decayed, and downed meat. (all tossed from racetrack kennels stamped "NOT FIT FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION". Michael Mooney reported what he saw not what he wanted HIDDEN!
That's some kind of love. Yours? Anything but!

Do you place bets , pocket your winnings and then just forget about those dogs, go home and pat the kids?

The poor Greyhounds to think they have to associate with such pimps putting steroids in their veins to get more bucks.
The Egyptians treated them with respect and like royalty. They are all over their tombs. They were not caged by hicks that can't spell and thrown cancerous meat.
They were not abused, beaten, clubbed or shot. They were buried with their Kings and lived within palaces.
It's called "cultivated". Appreciated. Revered.
Some people use the Bible for a buck. But what you do is far worse. You kill and mistreat people and animals in the name of God.
We are all still waiting for the invitation to a kennel, racetrack or breeding farm. Michael Mooney would give it another swing if the invitation was sincere.
The clock is ticking.
